Measuring Cup Math

Measuring Cup Math is a way to teach your child fractions. Start with a disposable plastic cup and mark off  1 cup. You can add 1 cup of liquid to see where to put the line, then empty. Have your child add a 1/4 cup of liquid (water, colored water, etc) into the cup.  Ask them to draw a line and say it is 1/4 of 1 cup of water. Then have them add another 1/4 cup. Have them draw a line. Now tell them it is 1/2 a cup of water. Then add another to make 3/4 cup and the final 1/4 to make 1 cup. They can see the lines they made. Dump it out and have them try different sizes of measuring cups like a 1/2 cup to see what happens when you add 2 of them. Have them add 1/4 cup three times to see that it makes 3/4 cup. After all the fraction practice you could make cookies together and have them use the measuring cups to add ingredients. Because what is the point of learning about fractions unless you use them in everyday life and show your kids that when you know fractions you get cookies.
